Installation

Exposition à VOX, centre de l'image contemporaine, Montréal, 23 avril au 20 juin 2026

Présentée dans le cadre du cycle de recherche Ce que l'exposition fait aux livres, cette nouvelle production de Lynda Gaudreau explore le roman-photo comme matière à la fois narrative et conceptuelle. Genre populaire fondé sur une séquence d'images fixes accompagnées de dialogues, le roman-photo est ici disséqué, puis réorganisé dans un dispositif scénographique qui en perturbe les codes. Textes, son et images s'y déploient de manière désynchronisée et transforment la narration en une mise en exposition faite de ruptures, d'ellipses et de suspensions dramatiques.

Inspirée de l'esthétique italienne du giallo, l'intrigue consiste en une série de crimes marqués par la mutilation des yeux des victimes. Ce motif renvoie à la pulsion et à ce désir de voir qui traverse le cinéma et la culture visuelle. Dans le giallo comme dans le roman-photo, cette pulsion s'inscrit souvent dans une économie voyeuriste et genrée où les corps féminins deviennent le spectacle de la violence et du désir. Le récit expose donc, métaphoriquement, cette pulsion, tout en engageant le public dans une réflexion sur son propre rôle ; l'acte de voir y devient incertain, fragmenté, constamment remis en question.

This new installation by Lynda Gaudreau, presented as part of the research cycle What Exhibition Does to Books, explores the photonovel as both narrative and conceptual material. The popular format built on sequences of still images accompanied by dialogue is here dissected and reorganized into a staging device that upends the genre's tropes. Texts, sounds, and images tumble out of sync, transforming the narrative into an exhibition mode emphasizing ruptures, ellipses, and dramatic suspensions.

The storyline, inspired by the aesthetics of Italian giallo cinema, proceeds through a series of crimes in which the victims' eyes are mutilated. This motif references the drive and desire to see that is integral to cinema and visual culture. In both the giallo and photonovel genres, that impulse is often inscribed in a voyeuristic, gendered economics that transforms female bodies into a spectacle of violence and desire. The narrative thus exposes the impulse metaphorically, while prompting the audience to think about its role; the act of seeing becomes uncertain, fragmented, constantly questioned.

Out of Mies

L'architecte Ludwig Mies van der Rohe a réalisé trois projets architecturaux à Montréal : les appartements de l'Île-des-Soeurs (1962), le square Westmount (1968) et la station-service Esso (1968).

Out of Mies est constitué de trois courts métrages en référence à l'architecte Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Les films ont été tournés sur les trois sites construits à Montréal durant les années soixante à un moment d'importants changements sociaux au Québec. En 1967, Montréal fût l'hôte de l'exposition universelle, Expo 67, intitulée Terre des Hommes. Les films traduisent l'espoir, la liberté et le futur caractérisant l'esprit de l'époque.

The architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe realized three architectural projects in Montreal: the Nuns' Island apartments (1962), Westmount Square (1968) and the Esso gas station (1968).

Out of Mies consists of three short films in reference to the architecture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The films were shot on the three sites built in Montreal during the 1960s at a time of great social change in Montreal. In 1967, Montreal hosted the world's fair, Expo 67, entitled Man and His World. The films reflect the hope, freedom and future that was the spirit of the times.

The installation includes a selection of works from the gallery's permanent collection as well as a collection of paintings by artist Martin Tétreault.

OoS c'est l'histoire du scénario d'un film pour une exposition qui n'est pas terminée. Le film n'existe toujours pas, le temps file, l'exposition approche et Lynda Gaudreau doit présenter son exposition. Elle décide de montrer les scènes filmées dans une des salles de la galerie et de poursuivre le développement du scénario tout au long des cinq semaines de l'exposition.

Le projet artistique s'inscrit dans la série OUT de Lynda Gaudreau. OoS pour OUT of SIGHT, s'intéresse à ce qui est en dehors de notre champ de vision mais qui pourtant agit activement sur notre perception.

OoSis the story of an exhibition in development. The project includes a film. The script is unfinished. Time is running out and the film does not yet exist. With the exhibition approaching, LG decides to show the scenes already shot in one of the rooms of the gallery while continuing to develop the script during the five weeks of the exhibition.

OoSis part of the series OUT by Lynda Gaudreau. OoSfor OUT of SIGHT is concerned with what is outside our field of vision but that nevertheless acts upon our perception.

Out of Grace

Out of Grace a été présenté à la Galerie Leonard & Bina Ellen de Montréal en décembre 2010. Invitée par la galerie à diriger un projet de commissariat en arts visuels, Lynda Gaudreau a conçu un projet expérimental d'exposition.

Les artistes visuels Alexandre David, Aude Moreau, Jérôme Fortin, Yann Pocreau et Chi Chen Wang ont été invités à réfléchir à la présentation de leurs œuvres au fil des cinq semaines de l'exposition.

Out of Grace was presented at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery in Montreal in December 2010. Invited by the gallery to curate a visual arts project, Lynda Gaudreau designed an experimental exhibition project.

Visual artists Alexandre David, Aude Moreau, Jérôme Fortin, Yann Pocreau and Chih-Chien Wang were invited to reflect on the presentation of their works over the course of the five-week exhibition.

Out of Grace, M Museum, Leuven, 2012

Exposition chorégraphiée dans la collection permanente du musée

Dans le cadre de l'édition 2012 du festival Playground, Lynda Gaudreau a été invitée à adapter son projet d'exposition chorégraphiée Out of Grace pour une partie de la collection permanente du M Museum de Louvain. Du 8 au 11 novembre, les quatre salles de l'ancien bâtiment du M ont accueilli une nouvelle version du projet. Des éléments tels que le son, la lumière et la présence du corps dans l'espace ont été intégrés au sein d'une partition orchestrant la « mise en scène » des œuvres de la collection.

As part of the 2012 edition of the Playground festival, Lynda Gaudreau was invited to adapt her choreographed exhibition project Out of Grace for a part of the permanent collection of the M Museum in Leuven. From November 8 to 11, the four rooms of the old M building hosted a new version of the project. Sound, light and the presence of the body in space were integrated into a score orchestrating the "staging" of the works in the collection.
